What is an ATS resume?
An applicant tracking system (ATS) is software that many employers use to collect, scan, and rank resumes before a human ever reads them. An "ATS resume" simply means one it can parse correctly: plain, machine-readable text with clear section headings, rather than text embedded in an image, dense tables, or unusual multi-column layouts that scramble the reading order. Every Craftume template is built with this in mind, so your content — not your formatting — is what gets screened.
How to write a resume
Start with your contact details, then a short professional summary (two or three sentences on who you are and what you're looking for). List your work experience in reverse-chronological order — most recent job first — with a few bullet points per role describing what you did and, where possible, the measurable result. Follow with education, then skills, and add sections like projects, certifications, or languages only where they strengthen your case for the specific role.
Common resume mistakes
The most common issues are: an objective statement that talks about what you want instead of what you offer; bullet points that list duties instead of outcomes ("responsible for..." instead of "reduced... by..."); inconsistent formatting (dates, fonts, spacing); typos and grammar slips; and a resume that runs long simply because nothing was ever cut. A second pair of eyes catches most of these faster than you can yourself.
Best resume format
For most job seekers, reverse-chronological is the safest and most widely expected format — it lists your most recent experience first and is what both recruiters and ATS software are built to expect. A skills-first (functional) format can help if you're changing careers or have gaps, but it's used less often and some recruiters view it with suspicion, so use it deliberately rather than by default.
How long should a resume be?
One page for most early- to mid-career applicants. Two pages is reasonable once you have ten-plus years of relevant experience or a field (like academia) that expects more detail. The goal either way is density — every line should earn its place — not a target page count.
Frequently asked questions
Is Craftume really free?
Yes — every template, every edit, and every PDF download is free, with no premium tier and no watermark added to your file. There is no export paywall.
Do I need an account to build a resume?
No. You can build and download a resume without signing up. Creating a free account is only useful if you want to reach your resumes again from another device.
Will my resume have a watermark?
No, never — on any of the 30 templates, on any download.
Is my resume ATS-friendly?
All 30 templates are built and checked to parse cleanly in applicant tracking systems — no text-in-image headers and no multi-column layouts that scramble when a screener reads them.
Can I switch templates after I've started?
Yes. Switching templates only changes the design — your content, sections, and section order all carry over untouched.
Can I build more than one resume?
Yes — there's no limit on how many resumes you create or download, whether or not you have an account.
